Internal design

Different construction elements (for example, partition walls, pillars) and surface treatment materials (timber, tiles, veneer, wallpaper, paint) can be used for internal design of a log house.

Finnlog houses are mostly built according to a principle where massive logs are used to erect external walls while internal walls are built as light-weight structures. This is meant to contribute to a unique and more diversified internal look. Cost efficiency is also important – as logs are quite expensive, deciding in the favour of light-weight structures will contribute considerably to cost saving.

Water-based paint, varnish, stain or natural oils are mostly used to treat log walls, wall or ceiling boards. Achievement of a uniform, well-covered surface, which hides wood grain, is mostly the objective for painting wooden surfaces. Here one should keep on mind that two layers of paint, as maximum, should be applied; also, the layers should not be too thick as intensive moisture regulation of wood could result in paint peeling off the treated surface. Water-based varnish is mostly used as it contributes to natural look and easy-to-clean log surfaces. In the case of varnish, water that evaporates in a day or two is also the binding element. Water-based varnish, applied to logs, does not contribute to the incurrence of allergies and is quite harmless for human beings. In the case of stain it is important to keep on mind that different quantities of pigment have been added to stain, manufactured by different producers. Therefore, a sample area should be definitely treated before stain is applied to large areas. Natural oils are sometimes also used to treat wooden surfaces. Linseed oil, enhancing the natural grain of wood, is ideal for that purposes.

A variety of paint, structured plaster and natural clay is often used to treat partition walls, built of either gypsum boards or FIBO blocks. A variety of natural stone is also available for that purpose.

Either ceiling boards or gypsum board, which can be painted or tinted to match the interior, is mostly used for covering roofs or ceilings of log houses. As for floor covering material, Finnlog recommends ceramic tiles for wet premises while wooden parquet or boards should be used for other rooms. Strength and good resistance to mechanic damage are the advantages of wooden parquet, therefore, this material is the most favourable for dwelling houses.
